Dermal fillers treat wrinkles and volume loss across the mid and lower face, most often the cheeks, lips, and the lines around the mouth, nasolabial folds, marionette lines, chin, jawline, and under-eye hollows. At Luna Med Spa, we review each area we treat and determine when filler isn’t the right tool.
Which parts of the face can dermal fillers treat for wrinkles?
Dermal fillers treat wrinkles and volume loss across the mid- and lower-face. The most common areas are the cheeks, the lips, and the lines around the mouth, nasolabial folds, marionette lines, the chin, the jawline, and under-eye hollows.
What Dermal Fillers Actually Do to a Wrinkle
Dermal filler treatment works by adding volume beneath the skin so the line softens & lifts from underneath. Nothing is being frozen or relaxed. The filler restores support where support has quietly been lost, which is why the change tends to look like rest rather than intervention.
Most facial fillers used today are made from hyaluronic acid, a substance your body already produces. It binds water, which is why it settles into the tissue and feels soft rather than stiff. At Luna Med Spa, we use JUVÉDERM®, Restylane®, and Versa fillers, & the choice depends on the area being treated and how much structure it needs.
One thing patients appreciate about injectable fillers: you will see a difference the same day. The true picture emerges once initial swelling settles over the following week, & results typically last from six months to over a year, depending on the product, the area, and your metabolism.
The Wrinkles Filler Treats and the Wrinkles It Does Not
Filler addresses static lines, the creases you can see when your face is completely at rest. Those lines come from facial volume loss and structural change over time, which is exactly what filler is designed to correct.
Dynamic lines work differently. These lines appear when you move, like forehead lines and crow’s feet, and come from repeated muscle movement rather than lost volume. Filler is not the answer there. Those respond to a neuromodulator instead, and we reach for BOTOX® and DYSPORT.
Most patients have some of both, which is completely normal and nothing to feel self-conscious about. It is also very common to address both in the same appointment using different products in different places, which is often why a result looks balanced rather than patched.
Cheeks and Midface Volume
Cheek fillers restore midface volume, & this is often the best place to start. When the cheeks flatten, the face loses its scaffolding, and tissue that once sat high starts to settle lower.
That is why cheek treatment surprises people. Restoring midface volume can soften nasolabial folds without injecting the folds directly, because it returns support to where it originally sat. It is a bit like re-inflating the structure rather than filling in the consequences.
Cheek filler also improves contour and symmetry, so it is not purely a wrinkle conversation. Faces are rarely perfectly even to begin with, & small differences become more noticeable as volume changes. For many patients, the midface is the area that makes everything else look more rested.
Nasolabial Folds and Marionette Lines
Nasolabial folds and marionette lines are the two areas most people mean when they search for wrinkle fillers. Nasolabial folds run from the sides of the nose down to the corners of the mouth. Marionette lines continue from the corners of the mouth downward, and patients most often describe them as making them look tired or unhappy when they feel neither.
These are among the longest-established uses for filler and typically among the most responsive areas on the face. That said, depth matters. A softer, newer fold usually responds better than one etched in for years, & results vary from person to person.
Expect an honest answer here, not an optimistic one. Our provider at Luna Med Spa will tell you what level of correction is realistic for your fold.
Lips and the Lines Around the Mouth
Lip fillers address shape, definition, and volume, and the amount is genuinely flexible. We offer a full syringe, a half syringe, and a quarter syringe option for light maintenance, so a subtle result is a real goal rather than a consolation prize. If you have been hesitant because you do not want anyone to notice, that is a completely reasonable request and a common one.
The fine vertical lines above the lip are a separate concern from lip volume, and they are treated differently. Those perioral lines call for softer, thinner formulations placed very superficially. Adding volume to the body of the lip will not resolve them.
Worth knowing: filler injections in the lips tend to metabolize faster than filler placed in the folds, because the area moves constantly throughout the day. That is not a flaw in the product, just how lips work.
Chin, Jawline, and Under-Eye Hollows
Chin, jawline, and under-eye filler round out the facial areas we treat, and two of the three tend to surprise patients who arrived thinking only about lines.
- Chin filler adds projection and structure, which changes how the lower face and jawline read, particularly in profile.
- Jawline filler redefines the border between the face and the neck as that edge softens over time.
- Under-eye filler addresses hollowing and the shadow it casts, and this is a technically demanding area that calls for an experienced injector rather than a bargain.
One caution about the under-eye area, because it matters. Not every concern there is hollowing. Darkness caused by pigment, or skin that has grown thin and crepey, will not improve with volume, and placing filler into the wrong under-eye problem can make the area look heavier instead of brighter. This is an area where careful assessment matters more than eagerness.
